The "Medium-Ist" Mindset: Why Your Home Doesn't Have to Be Perfect to Be Joyful

One of the most common myths in the world of professional organizing is that a professional's home must be a flawless, untouchable museum. Melissa Klug, the founder of Home By Eleven, is the first to debunk this. As she often tells her clients across the Twin Cities, her own home is not perfect because human beings and a very cute dog actually live there. Melissa describes herself as a "medium-ist" rather than a strict minimalist. She believes that a home should be a living space that supports your lifestyle, not a source of constant pressure to maintain an impossible standard.

This refreshing, down-to-earth philosophy is what makes Melissa such a sought-after partner for those in Minneapolis and St. Paul who are ready to break free from the "burden of stuff."

The "Lightning Bolt" Moment

Melissa’s own transformation began in 2017. After two decades in a high-stress corporate career, she found herself at a crossroads. Despite her professional success, she realized she had spent years "emotional shopping" to cope with stress, accumulating things that didn't truly serve her. It was then that she picked up Marie Kondo's book and experienced what she calls a "lightning bolt" moment. By working through her own home category by category, she discovered that letting go of what no longer sparked joy created a physical and mental lightness she had never felt before. This personal breakthrough is what led her to become a Master Certified KonMari® Consultant.

The Power of the "Box Sweep"

Sometimes, what feels like an insurmountable clutter problem is actually just a volume problem. One of Melissa’s favorite "quick win" strategies is the simple act of breaking down cardboard boxes. She has found that the sheer amount of packaging and empty boxes in a client's home can account for a huge portion of the perceived mess. By performing a dedicated "box sweep," the true organizing task suddenly becomes much more manageable. It is these practical, high impact shifts that help her clients move from feeling defeated to feeling empowered.

Remaking Your Life at Any Stage

Perhaps the most inspiring part of the Home By Eleven story is Melissa’s belief that you can remake your life at any age. Whether you are 20 or 60, transitioning careers or navigating a new season as an empty nester, your home should be your ally. Melissa’s mission is to take the "schlepping" and the stress out of the equation. By handling the heavy lifting, including her signature service of hauling away all donations, she ensures that you can focus on the joy of your newly cleared space. She is proof that once you change your relationship with your belongings, you change your relationship with your life.
